Abstract

Treatment alternatives for pediatric trigger thumb in infants, ranges from evaluation to surgery. Early surgical intervention is recommended for individuals with severe fixed trigger thumb (type IV) in order to alleviate discomfort and prevent the development of further deformity. Trigger thumb is often overlooked since its evaluation is typically not included in newborn screenings. We report a case of a 3-month-old child with fixed type III & IV deformity who did not respond to conservative treatment. After two months of conservative treatment, the child still had fixed flexion contracture in both of his thumbs, thus surgery was performed to release the A1 pulley. The patient's recovery proceeded well, the thumbs were normal and their range of motion had steadily increased without any popping, clunking, soreness, or stiffness at the one-year follow-up.
